The preparation and property control of Zinc Oxide NPs

ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention recently because it is nontoxic, chemically stable towards air, and inexpensive luminescent material instead of the GaN- based structures. However, in general, two emission peaks appear in the ultraviolet and visible region in the photoluminescence spectra of ZnO NPs because of trapping with surface states or a lattice defect. Therefore, in this study, we tried to control the defect of ZnO NPs to obtain pure band-edge emission peak, as well as to keep the dispersivity as colloidal solution. At first, we applied high temperature (300°C) to synthesize ZnO NPs, however, short reaction time (<30s) was not enough for obtaining pure-band-edge emission ZnO NPs, whereas long time (>120s) reaction made ZnO NPs to lose its colloidal stability and aggregated to decrease their PL intensity significantly. So, low synthesis temperature (200°C) was hardly obtaining emission peak even after 1h of heating. Therefore, it was tried to divide synthesis into two steps to generate ZnO NPs at high temperature (300°C) and to heal the defect with the dispersing quality keeping at low temperature (200°C). As a result, we succeed to suppress the defects of ZnO NPs and obtain the well-dispersed pure band-edge emission ZnO NPs.
