Synthesis of polystyrene derivatives containing pendant adamantyl groups via anionic polymerization

Styrene derivatives p-substituted with adamantyl groups, 4-(1-adamantyl)styrene (1) and 4-(1-adamantyl)-α-methylstyrene (2), were polymerized with sec-butyllithium in THF at -78°C. The anionic polymerizations of 1 and 2 proceeded quantitatively to afford the polymers having the predicted M_ns and the narrow MWDs. The resulting poly(1) and poly(2) had high T_gs of 232°C and 273°C compared with those of polystyrene (T_g = 100°C) and poly(α-methylstyrene) (T_g = 160°C).
