N2 - We examined the incidence of diabetic retinopathy among inhabitants of Hisayama in northern Kyushu with a population of about 7,500. A total of 1,785 persons, or 42.6% of 4,187 persons aged 40 years or older, received funduscopy and fundus photography under mydriasis. Diabetes mellitus was present in 291 persons (16.3 %). Diabetic retinopathy was found in 46 persons, or in 15.8% of 291 diabetics. The incidence of retinopathy was 5.7% of diabetics in the fifth decade and 21.7% of those after 60 years of age.
