Research on an integrated medical information system for supporting not only clerks but also physicians, nurses and other medical staff personnel at a Japanese hospital is reported. This integrated hospital information system is a pilot model for developing a commercial hospital information system. The clerical activities system and the prescription order service were computerized in September 1979 as a first step toward the total clinical information processing system. The computer service, man-machine interface and the prescription order service configuration are described.
