N2 - This paper investigates the stylized facts for Japan's policy of cooperation between industry and the academic sector with experiential data. The results of the analysis make it apparent that the importance of intellectual property as a medium of knowledge flow is limited by nature in Japan. Furthermore, the results indicate that one future issue for the policy in Japan is to support the informal information exchange between industry and the academic sector and to convert "invisible" cooperation arising from such exchange into a more "visible" cooperation.
