When a high-speed railway train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates along the tunnel. This wave subsequently emerges from the exit portal of the tunnel as an impulse sound which may cause noise problems in the surrounding area. The present paper analyzes the reflection process of a propagating compression wave from a tunnel exit and the generation mechanism of an impulse sound emitted from the tunnel exit. The experimental analysis is carried out on the discharge of a compression wave from an open end of a tube, which has an infinite baffle plate at the end. The magnitude of a generated impulse sound obtained by experiments are compared with the results by the aeroa- coustic analysis with the proposed open end correction. The relation between the compression wave inside the tunnel and an impulse sound outside is made clear theoretically and experimentally.
