N2 - Long-term data obtained in Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) systems are valuable to investigate the effects of groundwater flow on the performance of Ground Heat Exchangers (GHEs). In this study, the physical properties of the formation and the groundwater velocity were estimated in a GHP system constructed in Akita Prefecture, Japan, through a history matching between measured and calculated well performances. Using the numerical simulation model, operation conditions of the GHP system were optimized by maximizing the heat exchange rate between GHE and formation. The numerical simulation showed that the location of GHEs could affect the heat exchange rates due to the advection effect of groundwater.
