Growth behavior of mesenchymal stem cell in 3D porous collagen scaffolds

    In this study, porous structures of pure collagen and collagen/β-TCP composite material were developed as scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rMSC) were then cultured in the scaffolds with α-MEM based medium and a differentiation supplement. It was found that the compressive moduli of the scaffolds with rMSCs tended to increase with progress of proliferation and differentiation of the cells. Collagen/β-TCP composites were considered to be better scaffold material than pure collagen.
