N2 - This study aimed to evaluate the effects of divalent cations on the short-time fluoride exposure induced-inhibition of the pH fall ability of Streptococcus mutans. In the presence of divalent cations, short-time fluoride exposure enhanced the inhibition of pH fall by S. mutans, probably due to the fluoride bound to bacterial cell via cations. Thus, it is suggested that the pre-rinse with divalent cations increases fluoride retention to plaque bacteria and subsequently enhances fluoride inhibition on acid production by dental plaque in vivo.
