Crossover of weighted mean fragment mass scaling in two-dimensional brittle fragmentation

    The low-impact energy and brittle fragmentation experiments, performed with the use of glass tubes and glass plates, to find the crossover weighted fragment mass scaling was discussed. The low-impact energy fragmentation that involved dropping a one-dimensional (1D) glass rod yielded log-normal distributions in the relatively low-impact energy regime. It was observed that the normalized weighted mean fragment mass scaling was universal and had a crossover point at which the fragment mass distribution changed from a log-normal to a power-law type. The results were not only consistent with other experiments and numerical simulations, but included unique experimental findings about the relatively large μ weighted mean fragment mass scaling.
