N2 - The experimental study was conducted on the application of explosive welding technique to urgent repairs of gas and water pipe networks. In this paper the essential factors for explosive welding are scrutinized from the point of view of minimizing damage to the steel pipe welded explosively with a flyer plate. The relationship between the damage to the pipe and experimental parameters such as stand off distance and amount of explosive was determined by a series of the explosive welding tests. Moreover, the flyer motion was analyzed numerically to evaluate the flyer velocity that can be obtained from high-speed photography. As a result, the optimum conditions for explosive welding on the pipe was determined experimentally to minimize the damage to the steel pipe.
