Concrete structures near the ocean have been severely deteriorated due to the penetration of sea salt in the air into concrete. A survey of sea salt in the air was conducted on the coast of the Japan Sea in winter seasons, in order to obtain the relationships among the amount of salt, the wind velocity and the distance from the coast. The salt penetration tests were also carried out under exposure in field and in laboratory. The results indicate that the salt penetration into mortar can be easily estimated from the material properties such as water-cement ratio, the annual wind velocity and the distance from the coast.
