Abstract

X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements near the Au L3 edge were made on Au(III) complex ions adsorbed on titania and alumina without a specific reducing agent. Compared with the XANES spectrum of a pure gold foil, the gold adsorbed on titania and alumina was found to be reduced to Au(0). The XANES method could obtain spectra of gold particles less than 1 nm in diameter, although a UV-visible absorption spectrum was difficult to observe with such samples.
