Abstract

Two-stage carbonization of coal was studied to obtain tars at high yield and solid coke of high strength. The coal was depolymerized sufficiently under pressure with an additive in the first stage and the residue after extraction of tar from the product from the first stage was carbonized after the moulding. The depolymerization of coal macro-molecules under pressure with a hydrogen donating additive is discussed in terms of tar production and fusibility of extracted residue. Influences of carbonization conditions of the first stage are also discussed.
