Abstract

The syntheses and thermal dissociation behaviors of polymers with hemiacetal ester structures in the side chain were examined by performing the radical polymerization of 1-alkoxypropyl and 1-alkoxyethyl methacrylates. The dissociation temperatures of the resulting polymers were influenced by their structures. The thermal dissociation behavior of the polymers was controllable by a simple molecular design of R1 and R2 units. The regeneration of carboxylic acids and vinyl ethers in the thermolysis of hemiacetal esters was detected by spectroscopic methods and supported by thermogravimetric measurements.
