Endoscopic surgery has been explosively popularized in Japan since 1990's. Endoscopic surgery is featured of two-dimensional vision through endoscopy and manipulations using endoscopic instruments. Three-dimensional medical images are great help to perform safe and precise operation. Detailed and minute anatomy of the targeted organ and peripheral tissue structures including vessels, is required in endoscopic surgery. Recent advances of computer aided medical images, augmented reality techniques, enables surgeon to perform preoperative simulation and intraoperative navigation. These trials may lead to minimally invasive tailored medicine. A popularization of robotic surgery is also expected in the near future.
