Abstract
Surface structures formed on Ag(001) by deposition of Na or K atoms at room temperature have been monitored with low-energy electron diffraction as a function of coverages. Sequential changes of structures, 2 × 1 → 3 × 3 → 4 × 2 → 2 × 1, is observed for Na/Ag(001), while a different sequence 2 × 1 → 3 × 1 is found for K/Ag(001). Different sequences of surface structures between the two adsorption systems are discussed in terms of the atomic-size effect.
