Abstract

Suppression of band broadening in liquid chromatography is important to improve column efficiency. We investigate a mechanism of band broadening in the monodispersed and polydispersed microstructured-columns. The bed porosity and pillar size distribution were controlled in these columns by using microfabrication techniques. The decrease of the bed porosity increased the A term in the Knox plot. The polydispersed pillar columns decreased the B and C terms. These results suggested that the decrease of stagnation in microchannel caused the suppression of band broadening.
