Supporting colocated interactions using RFID and social network displays

DeaiExplorer is using RFID technology to dynamically derive interconnected social clusters from a publication database which reveals these social networks on a display allowing collocated conference participants to discover interpersonal connections. RFID technology enables a new approach to supporting academic events that is in line with the vision of pervasive computing, using digital media to augment physical and social spaces rather than replacing them with disembodied virtual spaces. The DeaiExplorer communicates with RFID tags attached to participants' conference badges and visualizes their mutual connections derived from the DBLP and visually represents participants' relationships by different colors or node shapes in a graph structure. The system scans RFID tags and uses participants' names to retrieve records in the DBLP database where the participants can either passively view the displayed networks or actively explore the networks through interactive zooming and scrolling.
