N2 - This paper proposes a real-world avatar in distance learning. The avatar is a very simple robot that remote students can control and supports involving two kinds of awareness for teachers and students. One is activity awareness that includes gestures such as raising the hand and nodding the head. We have developed the avatar system with Phidgets that provides a programmable interface to control motors. This paper also describes the experimentation with this system in a distant learning setting.
