Study on the structure of water at copolymer surfaces carrying zwitterionic groups

Random copolymers of anionic and cationic monomers with various compositions were prepared by conventional free radical polymerization. The relationship between the structure of water in the vicinity of these copolymers and cell-adhesiveness was investigated. P(MA/DMAPMA) (1 : 1) did not affect the hydrogen-bonded network structure of water in their aqueous solutions significantly. ATR-IR spectra of water sorbed into the P(BMA/MA/DMAPMA) films was similar to that of free water, whereas that in PBMA film was not. Moreover, the number of platelets adhered to the P(BMA/MA/DMAPMA) films was much smaller than that to the PBMA film.
