Abstract

The direct injection stratified charge (DISC) combustion system has the ability to improve the thermal efficiency of spark ignition engine. It is a competent system to realize the lean combustion. Charging air flow motion is very important to form the desirable stratified charge and to reduce unburned hydrocarbon emission. In this study, the effects of bulk flow motion in the combustion chamber on combustion process was investigated using a constant volume combustion bomb. Air flow motion was varied by changing the chamber configuration. The results show the small difference in the air flow motion had the large influence on the combustion process.
