Abstract

This paper presents experimental and analytical studies of [0/90/-45/+45]S carbon/epoxy laminates with locally embedded delaminations. These laminates are subjected to quasi-static tension, and the strain distributions on the surface of the laminates are investigated using a moire method and a three-dimensional finite element method. These results indicate the strong influence of delaminations on the surface strain distributions of the laminates. The distributions of strain-energy release rates along the delamination crack front are calculated through three-dimensional finite element analysis using a new technique which is based on a virtual crack closure technique. The results show concentrations of GIII at the delamination crack front near the free edge of the laminates.
