Abstract

The Japanese government is promoting the large-scale introduction of renewable energy to establish a "carbon-free society in 2050". However, there are obstacles to introducing geothermal power generation, such as uncertainty, consensus building, and lead time, so the installed capacity will remain at approximately 510 MW as of April 2024 (Japan Geothermal Association: JGA). "Supercritical geothermal power generation," which utilizes geothermal resources under temperature and pressure conditions above the critical point of pure water, is attracting attention as a next-generation technology that can dramatically increase geothermal power generation in Japan and is listed as an important technology in the Japanese government's "Green Growth Strategy." The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization has been implementing national projects related to supercritical geothermal power generation. In this presentation, we will introduce the results of past projects and an overview of projects currently being implemented.
