Statistical studies of 167 cases of intraocular foreign bodies (Japanese)

90% of injuries were male, and female injuries showed a slight increase in number. The highest incidence was found in the second decade of life. The injuries tended to occur less frequently in the winter season. The use of a hand hammer was the major cause of the injuries and those who used a grass cutter were seen in 6 cases. The grass cutter injury became popular in the recent few years. Almost all the foreign bodies were iron. Location of foreign bodies was mostly in the posterior segment of the eye. Foreign bodies were successfully removed in 86%. Traumatic cataract was the most frequent complication. Visual acuity was improved in 53% of patients in treatment during admission.
