Abstract

This paper proposes an effective reinforcing technique for foundation of a breakwater, which provides resiliency to the breakwater against earthquake and tsunami. The technique involves use of sheet piles and gabion mound in the foundation of the breakwater as a reinforcing measure. A series of shaking table tests were performed to evaluate effectiveness of proposed technique under different earthquake loadings, and it was found that the reinforced foundation significantly reduced damage brought by the earthquakes.
