Abstract
As a preliminary study for the computer simulation of rotor vibration due to ball bearings, the spring property of ball bearing is analyzed. Derivation of the elastic reactive forces due to contact between balls and raceways is based on so-called Hertz theory of elasticity. Formulae to express the spring characteristics are presented for an ideal bearing whose inner ring is movable relative to the outer ring with five degrees of freedom besides rotation. Spring forces and moments are expressed in terms of inner ring motion, dominant factors and specifications of the bearing.
