    Abstract

The phase separation behavior of amorphous Si3N4-BN composite powder was investigated by spectroscopic methods. The powder was heat-treated in N2 at 1200-1600°C with and without Y2O3-Al2O3 sintering aid. The IR analysis indicated that Si3N4 and BN were separated above 1400°C and the crystallization was accelerated by the sintering aid. It was found from the XPS analysis that BN was expelled from the inside to the surface of composite particles during heating. Finally; The dense nanocomposite of Si3N4-BN system was obtained by hot pressing at 1800°C.
