Service life prediction system of polymeric materials exposed outdoors

Polymeric materials have many attractive properties, but the weatherabilities of those used outdoors have not been analysed in detail. Therefore, it is essential to establish a service life prediction system to be referred to in the specification of the design process. Degradation factors, solar ultraviolet irradiation, heat and moisture attack polymers exposed outdoors and cause defects. By introducing chemical reaction theories, degradation phenomena can be expressed as the mathematical model of a function of degradation factors and elapsed time. The author has developed a personal computer software system which determines degradation material constants in the model and predicts property changes overtime by simulating the degradation. A general concept of these methods is explained in this paper.
