    Abstract

Separation of yttrium (Y) from the heavy rare earth metals holmium (Ho) and erbium (Er) with 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethyhexyl ester as extractant was carried with a hollow fiber membrane extractor. The extraction mechanism was elucidated and the experimental results could be explained by a diffusion model with an interfacial reaction. Further, new synergistic reagents, oil-soluble surfactants of polyaminocarboxylic acid alkylderivatives, have been developed for the selective separation of rare earth metals. The selectivity of Y to heavy rare earth metals was enhanced by addition of a small amount of EDTA-oleylderivative.
