Abstract

A novel isostatic compaction method termed Bingham semi-solid/fluid isostatic pressing is proposed and developed for the production of green compacts of metallic and ceramic powders. A semi-solid mold is employed to shape the product and to achieve isostatic pressure during the process. This study identifies the characteristics and roles of the semi-solid material, penetration of the mold into the powder and includes an examination of the homogeneity of the compact. It is demonstrated that complicated powder compacts can be fabricated by this process with a homogeneous density distribution at low cost.
