The optical second harmonic generation (SHG) technique was successfully applied to the studies of electrostatic interactions between azobenzene and viologen at the solid/liquid interface. The SHG was compared between an azobenzene-viologen linked compound and non-linked systems. The presence of electrostatic interactions at the interface were verified.
