Abstract
We have been developing a system for automatic analysis of remotely sensed images, especially of LANDSAT TM images. The system, which is called ELIA (an Expert system for LANDSAT Image Analysis), is designed to analyze the images and extract geographical and land-use information This paper presents a road extraction process built in ELIA The process consists of (i) augmented edge primitive detection using long-shaped edge templates, (ii) edge clustering, (iii) connection of fragmental road segments based on collinearity and perpendicularity, etc.. The effectiveness of this method is shown in some experimental results.
