Abstract
The stop-hole stress characteristics under out-of-plane shear (mode III) were compared with that under in-plane tension (I) and shear (II). Drilling effect of mixed mode I & III cracks were analyzed. The result shows that drilling for mode III cracks can achieve a better effect. The stop-hole life Ni is related to component failure life Nf, elastic modulus, stress intensity factor KI and hole radius R. The ratio Ni/Nf is linear to hole edge strain and KI/R, through which the hole life in real bridges can be evaluated. Critical and reasonable hole diameters can also be determined after measuring KI.
