Abstract
Fatigue reliability of structural components and the inspection and repair cost under non-periodic inspection are formulated. An optimal inspection plan in terms of small probability of failure is proposed. A numerical example for crack propagation in fastener holes of airframe components is worked out. It is shown that both significant recoveries of reliability of structural components and great benefit in maintenance economy are obtained by choosing the first inspection time properly.
