Abstract
Very large floating structures (VLFS), are basically simple box-structures featuring high stability with low manufacturing costs and easy maintenance suitable for use in calm water. VLFS installation consumes less time for construction and it also does not disturbs the sea bed, current flow, and the water quality. A 1km-long floating test runway constructed in Tokyo Bay was considered the world's largest man-made island and was created to study the feasibility of floating airports. The first large floating platform constructed at the Marina Bay in Singapore is designed in such a way that it can be dismantled readily and towed away when the sea space is required and reconfigure into different platform shapes as desired. Future research on VLFS may include hydroelastic analysis subjected to finite and large amplitude waves, response due to slamming of load, and analytical consideration of viscous effect based on the Navier-Stokes equation.
