Abstract
A class of new, exact solutions of the Flierl-Petviashvili equations were identified using the method of positions of complexes. The solutions were found to be periodic and have the geometry of zonal flow. They had necessary characteristics to represent the zonal flow as coherent non-linear structure. The physical properties were examined and the solution were found to reproduce data from experimental observations.
