The authors express their thanks to the staff of the AVF cyclotron at the RCNP for the efficient operation of the accelerator. They are also indebted to Professor M. Blann for the usage of his code ALICE85 and helpful discussion. Sincere thanks are expressed to the late Professor M. Igarashi for the usage of his codes DWBA2 and UBFFl and stimulating discussions, and to Proffesor M. Ichimura and Proffesor H. Sakai for discussions and important suggestions. Sincere thanks are also expressed to Proffesor W.G. Weitkamp for interesting discussions. We would like to thank Dr. M. Iwaki and Dr. 0. Kamigaito at Kyoto University for joining the final stage of this work. The DWBA and the preequilibrium calculations have been performed on a FACOM M-340 computer at Kyoto university, a FACOM M-200 computer at RCNP and a HITAC M680H computer at KEK. This experiment was performed at the RDNP, Osaka University under Program Numbers 20A05,21A03,22A15 and 27COl and was supported in part by a Grant-in Aid for Scientific Research No. 60420007, No. 62790117a nd No. 63044073o f the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. Two of the authors (M.I. and M.Y.) are grateful to the Fellowships of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for Japanese Junior Scientists. One of the authors (M.I.) is indebted to Proffesor K. Nakai and members of the KEK-PS beam channel group for their encouragement.

N2 - The double-differential cross section d2σ/dΩ dE, analyzing power Aγ, polarization Py' and polarization transfer coefficient Ky'y were measured for the (d, pX) reaction with 65 MeV deuterons for 12C at 14.0° and for 58Ni at 7.0°, 14.0°, 20.5° and 40.0°. The experimental data were analyzed within the framework of the post-form DWBA appropriate for the "spectator breakup", and the preequilibrium exciton model together with the evaporation mode. The experimental angular distributions are well explained by taking account for these processes over the whole proton energy region observed.
