The phototunable photonic bandgap (PBG) of photosensitive cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) doped with fluorescent dye to generate laser feedback effect was discussed. It was observed that during the exposure of dye-doped CLC cell to UV light at 254 nm, continuous changes in the chiral PBG were found due to the photolysis reaction of cholestryl iodide embedded in the CLC host. It was also observed that the laser oscillation was tunable by the photocontrolled PBG of CLC host, and was stable at room temperature. Results show that laser oscillation is controlled in a wide wavelength range from 610 to 700 nm by photoassisted adjustment of CLC photonic bandgaps.
