Abstract

The new demands for transport and stationary energy storage systems have renewed the interest in metal-air batteries, in particular, in secondary (rechargeable) systems, given their advantages in terms of energy density, lifetime, safety, and cost, among others. In this context, in addition to the well-known Zn-air technology, new emerging technologies are being developed, both in aqueous and nonaqueous media. This chapter aims to provide an overview and the latest developments of the main alternative secondary metal-air batteries, discussing their basic principles, characteristics, and challenges facing a potential future application.
