Abstract
The effect on pollutant concentrations over cities of the night time urban boundary layer (UBL) is described. An extensive field observation of the UBL was conducted over Sapporo, Japan, in November 1984 to clarify the pollutant diffusion mechanism. The turbulence characteristics of the UBL, the vertical profiles of momentum and the heat flux were significantly different from those outside the UBL. The mechanism of formation of the UBL is also discussed. (D.W.T.)
