Abstract

We observed 39 eyes od idiopathic macular hole using monochromatic scanning laser ophthalmoscope. Vitrectomy was later performed in 24 of these eyes. Observation with argon laser showed disappearance of foveal depression due to traction by posterior vitreous membrane followed by formation of macular hole with cyst formation. The findings showed that tangential traction by the posterior vitreous membrane led to the formation of macular hole. After vitreous surgery, the foveal depression reappeared with flattering of the retina regardless of its stage.
