Abstract

Beam-to-tubular column connections using external diaphragms may have the high structural reliability of columns, but the size of the external diaphragm may place limits on the design of exterior frames for the building. To overcome this problem, we propose a connection made using vertical stiffeners instead of a diaphragm. This paper describes a formula to calculate the connection's strength and presents the results of tests done to determine the connection's strength and aseismic capacity.
