Abstract

A facility of Japanese text processing is implemented by modifying the macro implementation of SNOBOL4. Japanese characters are represented as 16-bit codes, while the traditional alphanumeric characters are coded in 8 bits. The SNOBOL4 processor is modified to manipulate Japanese text which is freely composed of both Japanese and alphanumeric character sets. By normalizing each alphanumeric character into 16 bits, no modifications of string manipulation algorithms in the original implementation are needed. The improved execution time efficiency of the SNOBOL4 processor with Japanese text processing facility is described. Experience is discussed from the viewpoint of software maintenance.
