Abstract
A system of quantitatively detecting voids/fractures and estimating roof rock strength in the entry roof using roof bolter drilling parameters was developed. The results of series of underground and laboratory tests indicate that the feed pressure trends of dropping down to the level of drilling in the air when a void is encountered can be used to detect the voids. The results suggests that a void of 1/16-in or smaller cannot be detected by the system developed. It was found that both penetration rate and rotation rate have obvious impact on the magnitude of net feed pressure.
