Metal complexation and electrochemical characteristic of phenylazomethine macrocycles

Abstract

π-Conjugated polymers attract considerable attention due to their excellent redox properties. One of such polymers, polyphenylazomethine, has many imine sites, which easily coordinate metals. We are interested in cyclic phenylazomethine, and have synthesized a cyclic compound containing four imine sites with EZEZ conformation. Metal ions were introduced to CPA-Me and the coordination of metals to imines was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Based on the shift in isobestic points, the coordination probably occurs stepwise. Further, CPA-Me itself is not redox-active, but when complexed with metal ions, the reversible redox wave was clearly observed in cyclic voltammograms.
