N2 - The mechanical properties of sintered compacts made from KIP 4100 V, a vacuum-annealed AISI 4100 type of steel powder, were investigated in relation to the sintering conditions and graphite addition. The sintered KIP 4100 V compacts with 0.9% graphite addition gave the maximum tensile strength of 761 MPa at the sintering temperature of 1250°C, which was higher than that of the comparative 1%Ni-0.4%Cu-0.4%Mo alloyed steel powder, KIP 4600ES(626 MPa). The sintered and case-hardened KIP 4100 V compacts with 0.15% graphite gave the maximum tensile strength of 1170 MPa, absorbed energy of 6.8 J and hardness of 47 Rockwell C scale when the density was 7.15 Mg/m3. The wear volume of these sintered and case-hardened KIP 4100 V compacts was 4×10-3 mm3 (wear distance: 15000 m), while that of 4%Ni-1.5%Cu-0.5%Mo alloyed steel powder (KIP SIGMALOY 415 S) was 4×10-1 mm3. The sintered and case-hardened KIP 4100 V compacts showed less difference between tensile strength at higher temperature and that at room temperature, when compared to that of KIP SIGMALOY 415 S.
