N2 - A method for preparing monodisperse mammalian cell-enclosing subsieve-sized microcapsules from viscous polymer solution was developed. The droplet breakup technique with an immiscible liquid coflowing stream was applied for the preparation of subsieve-sized mammalian cell-enclosing capsules. The reaction was found to enhance cell viability due to reduced resistance to the transport of oxygen, nutrients and metabolites. Mechanical strength and biocompatibility were also found to be enhanced.
