Abstract

We have studied magnetic properties ofa Haldane system antiferromagnet (CH3)4NNi(NO)3 (TMNIN) diluted with nonmagnetic impurity Zn 2+ ions for the concentration, 7.0 %, 11.4 % and 20.4 % as well as non-diluted system. The susceptibility shows the Curie-law attributed to the edge spins of one-dimensional chain down to 1 K with tile Curie constant of 40 % of that expected of the free spin in the case of the VBS model. At lower temperature than 1 K, however, the paramagnetic contribution is found to be suppressed for the higher concentrations. In the heat capacity measurements: a small bump is observed around 0.6 K. The present results suggest the existence of the magnetic interaction between the edge spins via Zn 2+ ions or between the edge spins within 1D chain.
