LCST and UCST behavior of poly(N-vinylacetamide-co-acrylic acid) aqueous solution

The phase transition behavior of random copolymers of N-vinylacetamide (NVA) with Acrylic acid (AA) have been investigated. The copolymer aqueous solutions show both an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) and a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The UCST increased and the LCST decreased with increase of salts concentration. The dual thermosensitivity was not observed at pH>3.00. This indicates that it is necessary to protonate the AA units to show the dual thermosensitivity. In short, the copolymers formed intraand inter-polymer hydrogen bondings. Intra- and inter-polymer hydrogen bondings were confirmed by FT-IR measurements.
